Some of these villains have tragic backstories or motivations. (Slightly) better antagonists: You get three main bad guys each with a pair of henchmen.
There's no such thing as a Mana game with a great story, so for this series' standards, even a decent one is an achievement. You need to stop them, and all six characters are given decent motivations at the start of the game to embark on this quest (except Duran, whose motivation seems pretty dumb at first until he figures out that his family history ties into the current events of the game). Trials keeps it simple: there are three rival factions of bad guys who want to use the Mana Sword to make themselves gods. Again, Trials still isn't Chrono Trigger, but at least the plot isn't the butchered, schizophrenic mess Secret's was. Better story, even if the story isn't great. The Secret cast on the other hand is just kinda. They aren't Chrono Trigger or FFVI-quality characters, but they're likeable enough to root for and to want to see their story through. Their stories are propelled by tragedy from the get-go, and their motivations for questing remain fairly clear throughout the game. But I'll say more: Hawkeye and Riesz are also better characters than any of Secret's main trio. More diverse Hiroki Kikuta music of similar quality: I think the best-aged thing about Secret was Hiroki Kikuta's gorgeous melodies, but Trials has 'em too, and this time Kikuta experiments more with tropical and jungle sounds. Trials absolutely perfected the art of spritework. I can see now that adopting a hand-drawn painting-like art style was the only way for Legend of Mana to top Trials graphically. After playing Trials, though, Secret looks like an NES game in comparison. When I first played Secret, I thought it was the most beautiful, colorful, charming-looking game I'd ever seen. Better graphics: I can't believe its not a PS1 game! This game is pure eye candy. Here are all the ways Trials beats Secret: Its easy to have rose-tinted nostalgia for Secret of Mana if you played it as a kid in the mid-90's, but playing through Trials before replaying Secret revealed just how much better Trials was all along. The cool thing about the Mana Collection is that you can easily play Secret and Trials back to back and compare them to each other fairly. I have recently bought and played both it and Secret of Mana on the Nintendo Switch collection.
